"Jacob's Coat" from SAQA member Marcia DeCamp has been selected for the Form, Not Function: Quilt Art at the Carnegie exhibit.
The jurors were Kate Lenkowsky, Marti Plager, and Jennifer Sargent. They accepted 24 pieces from 278 individual entries received from 107 artists.
The Carnegie Center for Art and History is in New Albany, Indiana, and the exhibit will be held from January 6 through March 3, 2012

Marcia DeCamp's Jet Trails #9 (seen above) was selected for the Art Quilts XVI: Something to Say exhibit at the Chandler Center for the Arts in Chandler, AZ. The exhibit opened November 28, 2011, and runs through January 28, 2012.Artists in the show include SAQA NY members Benedicte Caneill, Lisa Chipetine and Marcia DeCamp.

Great SAQA Meeting in Auburn New York in December 11

This December meeting of SAQA members in Auburn, New York brought members and guests from Toronto, Buffalo, Rochester, Ithaca, Glens Falls and beyond! After a light lunch and an all too brief meeting, we discussed how to answer "What Do You Do?" followed by a great show and tell.

Led by Jeanne Simpson and Pat Pauly, co-reps for SAQA for upstate NY, the meeting had about 25 people gathered upstairs at the Schweinfurth Art Center. We all look so serious, but it was not always so.

Our show and tell was also a trunk show for enthusiastic visitors to the art center. We managed to entertain! Carol Soderlund, at left, holds Mary Diamond's piece (center) with Pat Pauly at right. There was time after the show to visit the Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibit downstairs.

Bev Kondolf at left, and Director Donna Lamb hold pieces for Ruth White while Ruth gives us delightful lesson on microbiology. At least, that is what this reporter remembers. You can see the fun we were having.

Nancy Hicks, wearing a great long African robe, offered this work along with a story of how she acquired the fabric and the making of the piece.

Aafke Steenhuis explained to the delight of the crowd the series that she has made on cornfields. Linda Bachman is below with her piece. We all felt that it was fun to gather again and made plans to meet in the warmer weather. Perhaps we can do this again during the Quilts=Art=Quilts show next year.

SAQA New York Luncheon and Trunk Show - December 11, 2011

Signature Art Quilts of Long Island Exhibit

Signature Art Quilters is a group of fiber artists who come from a wide range of artistic backgrounds. They meet monthly to share projects and critique and learn from one another. Their goal is to provide a stimulating and supportive environment that nurtures artistic vision and enhances the technical ability of each of their members.

Helene Kusnitz, West Hempstead, NY has a quilt “Hear the Color See the Sound”, traveling as part of the Signature Art Quilters special exhibit called “7”, with the Mancuso Brothers Quilt Show through November 2011. The inspiration for this quilt was from reading about people with a form of Synesthesia, those who can see a color when they hear a sound.

The evening of July 21, 2011 saw an informal meeting of many SAQA members at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Gallery when Jane Dunnewold gave a tour of her work on view there in Auburn, New York. Jeanne Simpson and Pat Pauly, co-reps for the upstate region of New York, greeted all who attended and introduced many to the benefits of membership. With a great number of attendees from Quilting By the Lake, a Schweinfurth sponsored program where Jane Dunnewold was one of the week's faculty, as well as the additional audience of SAQA members, it was quite an event.

Pat Pauly will have a solo exhibition at the Nazareth College Arts Center Gallery in Rochester, New York, June 30, 2011 – August 14, 2011. There will be an opening reception Friday, July 1, 2011 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Entitled “Sum of the Parts: Art Quilts of Pat Pauly,” the show will feature Pauly’s latest work in surface design and textile technique. An award-winning and nationally-known fiber artist, Pat Pauly uses personal imagery and freeform surface design in her modern take on a traditional art form. Lark Crafts is pleased to announce that Martha Sielman will be authoring the second volume in a new series of art quilt books. This book will focus on works that feature people and portraits—individuals or groups—that explore the human condition.

Each volume in the Art Quilt Portfolio series will include a Feature section, focusing on 15 to 20 artists in depth; this section will include an interview with each artist, several images of works by the featured artist, and a glimpse into each artist's working methods. The books will also include a Gallery of works by 70 to 80 selected artists. Both Feature and Gallery artists will be chosen from this Call for Consideration. Artists who are selected for inclusion in Art Quilt Portfolio: People and Portraits will receive full acknowledgement, a complimentary copy of the book, and the option to purchase additional copies from Lark at a discount.

Recent Meeting of Southern NY SAQA

I am thrilled to be joined by fellow NY SAQA Co-Representatives Pat Pauly and Jeanne Simpson. Their energy and commitment to SAQA is contagious. Recently, here in Southern Westchester we had an exciting meeting once again. This time, in my efforts to think out side the box, I invited Shobha Vanchiswar who is educated as a scientist and now is an artist, poet, author and award winning garden designer to speak with us her gardening from an artist's perspective. It was remarkable to hear her talk about her artistically developed and designed gardens and how her the language she used paralleled so much of our work at fiber artists. We discussed design, perspective, texture, emotional response to the work, foraging through the creative process, letting go of mistakes, and pursuing our artwork as authentically as possible. Thank you so many of the SAQA members who joined us and for bringing bountiful food for our first 1/2 hour of meeting, greeting and connecting with each other.

Be do remember, all SAQA members are invited to ALL NY SAQA MEETINGS where ever they are taking place. Join us all.

Upstate New York Meeting - June 11, 2011

Twenty-nine members traveled from Buffalo, Syracuse and Ithaca as well as Rochester for a meeting of the New York State SAQA. We gathered at The Gate House Cafe in Rochester for a "getting to know you" meeting. The enthusiasm was palpable. Jeanne Simpson and Pat Pauly, new co-reps for SAQA New York, were hosts. Jeanne began the meeting with a brief overview of SAQA and outlined some of the areas that she and Pat hope to facilitate as reps. The meeting continued with a limited introduction by each of the participants, some who brought work to share. Following a lovely lunch, the group toured Booksmart Studio and the “Parallax / Views of Contemporary Quilt Artists” exhibit a short walk away. Viewing the Fiberarts International Exhibit at the Memorial Art Gallery concluded the event.

Every three years, fiber artists from around the world submit their best recent work to Fiberart International, a juried exhibition organized by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh. In 2011, MAG will be one of only three tour stops for the prestigious show, which brings together work rooted in ancient techniques and materials, non-traditional textiles made possible by technological advances, and art made from such unexpected materials as cable ties and X-ray film.

SAQA New York member Lori Lupe Pelish has a wonderful four panel piece in this prestigious venue.

I viewed this show yesterday 5/1 and saw Lori's artwork. It is EXTRAORDINARY! I strongly urge anyone in the vicinity to attend this show!

Meeting June 11, 2011

Greetings SAQA Members,

This June presents us with a terrific opportunity to view art quilts along with a variety of other fiber art at two galleries within walking distance in Rochester, New York. I thought it would be the perfect time to schedule a regional meeting. There is a great restaurant, The Gate House Café, around the corner from the galleries which has a private room we can use to meet in and have lunch (about $15). My plans are to meet at 11 am on Saturday, June 11th, start with a quick one item show and tell, eat lunch, and then proceed to both galleries.

Parallax, View of Contemporary Quilt Artists, is an exhibition of 19 art quilters who have interpreted their ideas of a parallax view (images and ideas from multiple perspectives). Pat Pauly curated the show which includes work from Pamela Allen, Shelley Brenner Baird, Linda Bachman, Jette Clover, Marcia DeCamp, Terry Jarrard-Dimond, Sandra Townsend Donabed, Sylvia Einstein, Priscilla Kibbee, Beverly Kondolf, Paula Kovarik, Kathleen Loomis, Jeannette DeNicolis Meyer, Dominie Nash, Pat Pauly, Judith Plotner, Jeanne Simpson and Nelda Warkentin. Six of those exhibiting our regional SAQA members. The exhibit is located in the Kunstler Gallery at the Booksmart Studio and runs from May 30th to June 25th with an opening scheduled on June 3rd at 6pm. See the article below:

Auction 2011-new donation procedure

SAQA's Benefit Auction is our largest fundraiser. In 2010 we received 288 donations for the SAQA Benefit Auction. It was a fantastic auction and we raised $52,450. This was SAQA's biggest income source after membership dues.

With your help, we're hoping to do even better in 2011. We hope that each of you will create and donate a wonderful piece of art for the 2011 Benefit Auction, but in order to make the process go as smoothly as possible, we need to ask you to follow the guidelines below.

To facilitate entry of your information, please use the new online submission form, available through a link under SUPPORT SAQA at saqa.com.

REMEMBER:
1.    Donations must be only 10 - 12 inches (25 - 30 cm) in either direction. 12 inches will be the maximum accepted so that we can use standard Priority shipping boxes to save time and money.
2.    Only ONE work per artist will be accepted.
3.    Works on stretchers will be accepted but they may not be any larger than 12 inches and should be no deeper than 1 inch (2.5 cm).
4.    ALL artwork donated must be ready to hang. If artwork not otherwise mounted, a sleeve or other method of hanging must be attached. Artwork on stretchers should have hooks and wire attached.
5.    All donations must have label with title (or "untitled") and artist's name clearly written.
6.    There will be a space on the online submission to put a 25 word description of your work that should include materials/techniques to help bidders understand what the image on the website represents.
7.    Images will not be posted until the work is received.
8.    Please do not use peanuts, confetti, shredded paper, or padded envelopes filled with linty fuzz - all these things make a mess when opening the package and the confetti and fuzzy stuff sticks to the quilts. Tissue paper and bubble wrap are encouraged.
9.    Please mail your donation with a tracking number or pre-stamped/ addressed postcard to let you know it arrived. Auction coordinator will not email donor when work arrives.
10.    International donations should be sent early enough to arrive by the deadline after clearing Customs. Be advised that it can take up to 3 weeks for boxes to clear customs.

Second Quarterly Meeting of Southern SAQA NY

Twenty-seven Southern NY SAQA members arrived at the home of Southern NY Regional Representative Susan Schrott for the second quarterly meeting. Members brought a bounty of food for the first half hour and folks had the opportunity to reconnect and talk in a casual atmosphere.

This was followed by a one man presentation about his long career in photography by artist photographer Victor Friedman. Friedman has been creating photographic art for over forty years. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of the City of New York. He has exhibited in galleries in New York and Philadelphia as well as the University of Mexico and Haifa University, Israel. His prints were selected by the U.S. Ambassador to Germany for display on the walls of the US Embassy in Berlin. Photo credits include The New York Times, Popular Photography, Black & White Magazine and publications by West Publishing, McGraw-Hill, John Wiley, Harper & Row, and Penguin Group. His book Flag was recently published by Penguin Press.

Friedman spoke to SAQA members about his 40 plus years journey as an artist. He brought a wide selection of his artwork and members had the opportunity to ask varied questions about his artist life and career. It was especially helpful for many of the members to hear Friedman speak anecdotally about how he connected with galleries, museums and other fine art arenas. An interesting Q & A followed allowing SAQA members to make meaningful connections to their own work as fiber artists.

Iris Karp generously sent all of the members a generous supply of Misty Fuse. Although she couldn't attend the meeting, we thank Iris for her thoughtfulness and generosity. Immediately following members were invited to bring one piece of their artwork for critique and or show and tell. It was inspiring to see the varied artwork and to hear members discuss the inspiration for their work as well as the varied techniques used. Some members sought ideas for titles, quilting their work, art venue entries, ongoing exhibitions to name just a few.

In light of the holiday season, some members did bring a fabric stash to exchange with other members.

Many of the artists present at today's meeting are also exhibiting in the Fiber Celebration which will hold it's artist reception next Sunday December 12th from 1-3 PM at the Chappaqua Library.

The next quarterly Southern NY Meeting will take place on Sunday April 3 2011 from 12-3PM. The agenda will be announced in the coming weeks.

Western New York meeting

Western New York had a very informative meeting last month at SUNY Geneseo. It was held in conjunction with a beautiful show called "Exquisite Corpse", in the student union of the college. Many SAQA NY members contributed to this wonderful show.

Fourteen members attended the meeting. There was show and tell, where the variety of talent was wonderfully obvious to all. There was a discussion about how SAQA could better serve Western New York. We had a luncheon catered by the college, where the discussions continued.

After the luncheon, Pat Pauly (recently accepted to Quilt National '11, congratulations Pat!) had a slide show presentation, which was very informative to all who attended. This show was open to the meeting attendees, as well as anyone else who wished to come from the college. Her humerous style kept us all at full attention for an hour. If you have not heard Pat give a presentation, make sure, if given the chance you take advantage of hearing her speak.

September Southern NY SAQA Meeting

Hi there from your Southern New York SAQA Co -Representative Susan Schrott. I am thrilled to report that we had a fantastic turnout today for our Fall Southern NY SAQA Meeting.

We were extremely fortunate to kick off our meeting today with Sandra Sider who generously volunteered to critique several of the SAQA members work including: Tamar Drucker, Jamie Horikawa, Martha Levites and Lynda Long. But, before we got down to the critiques, presentation of artwork and discussions about upcoming plans and goals, we made sure to leave a good half hour to get to know each other. Folks came from NYC, CT, East Rockaway, New Rochelle and various towns in Westchester County. Everyone truly enjoyed making connections, meeting people in person and taking the time to get to know one another and do a bit of networking. Here first are some photos of our time getting to meet and greet each other over lunch.

We settled down to business and Sandra began her critiques. To begin with, she has an natural approach to making artists feel safe, comfortable and supported, so much so that she makes a point of noting what is particularly positive about the artwork from the get-go. With that said, her critiques are based on her expertise, extensive art background and long career of jurying and curating works (since 1998). We were extremely fortunate today to have Sandra critique five pieces and each artist as well as the members attending all gained tremendously from her comments.

Following the presentation of our individual work, I spoke more about the upcoming exhibition Fiber Celebration at the Chappaqua Library. The enthusiasm for this exhibition is palpable and it looks like will have quite a beautiful collection of small works for the show. We discussed meeting times and everyone unanimously agreed that we would like to meet every three months. The next meeting date will be sent in the coming weeks. Possible future plans include a group challenge and other topics to be discussed at our next meeting. Lisa Chipetine, President of SAQA, spoke about all of the opportunities available for learning on line through SAQA. Many of us didn't even know SAQA has a You-tube channel.

Just click on the link above and it will take you directly to it. Lisa let us know that if we have our own art related videos, tutorials etc, we can now put them on the SAQA You tube channel if we are members of SAQA. Contact Lisa directly if you are interested in more information about this.

SAQA NEW YORK FEATURED ARTIST, ELIZABETH ROSENBERG

Each month, SAQA New York will be featuring an artist from the great state of New York. Our members come from all parts of this very large state and we hope to feature folks from north, south, east and west of New York. This month we are featuring Westchester Artist, Elizabeth Rosenberg.

Elizabeth Rosenberg uses her sewing machine to create art from fabric and thread. Her carefully crafted, award-winning pieces feature abstract images of flowing lines.

Elizabeth teaches and lectures about art quilting. Her schedule appears on her website, http://www.elizabethrosenberg.com. She is also presently a full-time college student, enrolled at SUNY Empire College, where she is pursuing a Bachelor degree in the Arts. Attending college as a returning adult student after a more than thirty-year break to raise two sons has been an exciting, fun and challenging experience.
She lives in White Plains, New York with her husband and her little chihuahua, Topolina (the Italian word for “Minnie Mouse”).

"I create art using fabric and thread.
I am fascinated by lines, especially flowing lines that meander and curve as they form organic, sensuous paths. I see beautiful lines everywhere in the world around me. It give me enormous pleasure to translate them into lines of thread that create dimension and cast shadows as they hold the layers of my pieces together. For me, it's all about that flowing line."

In Elizabeth's Own Words...
I have been sewing since I was a child, as soon as my legs were long enough to reach the pedal of the sewing machine. I learned to knit, crochet, embroider, macramé and bead-weave as a young child. I have wonderful memories of many enjoyable hours spent doing crafty things such as painting-on-velvet, baking “shrinky-dinks” and weaving pot holders out of knitted fabric strips. Those childhood endeavors led to a life filled with the love of making handmade items.
As a young mother, I wanted to make a quilt for my newborn son, so I signed up for a class at the local library. That was in the late 1980’s. I’ve been quilting non-stop since, and have never looked back! I joined the local quilting guild; over the next few years I signed up for just about every workshop the guild offered. I was lucky to begin my quilting journey by studying with nationally known quilters such as Roberta Horton, who taught me how to piece with plaids, and her sister, Mary Mashuta, from whom I learned to love stripes. Taking a workshop given by Ruth McDowell, I developed complex piecing skills; from instructors with styles as varied as Elly Sienkiewicz, and Jane Sassaman, I learned to appliqué. Traveling to quilt shows and seminars, I was able to study with great artists such as Melody Johnson, Michael James, Harriet Hargrave, Emily Richardson, Hollis Chatelain, Cynthia Corbin and Nancy Crow. Those fabulous instructors opened my eyes to the artistic possibilities in the world of textile art.

In 1995 I began to work in a local quilt shop (now closed) where I taught classes in free-motion machine quilting, couching by machine, free-motion machine embroidery, fusible appliqué, reverse appliqué, color/design classes, and even classes based on quilts from my own pattern line, Inventing Tradition, as well as many popular patterns and books.

I created my pattern business to fill a void for quilt shop customers who complained that although there were plenty of patterns available for Christmas quilts, there were no patterns available to celebrate Jewish traditions such as Hannukah and Passover. I designed a few such quilts and offered classes in the quilt shop. They proved popular, encouraging me to develop them into patterns. I marketed the patterns, selling them to quilt shops and distributors for a few years. In 2008, I sold the pattern company to 1-800-Dreidel, a Judaica distributor located in California.

About six years ago I was invited to give a slide presentation to my own guild, and then branched out, traveling to other guilds in the New England and Mid-Atlantic region. Recently, I travelled to the Washington D.C. area to present my “Goddess Project” lecture and workshop for the Friendship Star Quilters. The trip whet my appetite for travel-teaching, and I hope to repeat the experience again soon . . if I am able to fit it into my busy school schedule!

In 2008, during a trip to Venice, Italy, I discovered the ancient art of lacemaking, still practiced today on the lagoon island of Burano. I was so fascinated by the beautiful, intricate lace that the following year I travelled back to Venice to take lessons from a master lacemaker for three weeks. The lace, and the experience of learning to form the stitches, has influenced my work and has led to a new series of quilts called “Venetian Lace.” In this series, I employ the use of both improvisational piecing and fused appliqué, along with a machine technique I call “free-motion-blanket-stitching.” Also new to this series is the use of hand-embroidered edgings. I am presently developing a Venetian Lace power-point presentation and a workshop.

My most recent endeavor is a book proposal that I am currently “shopping around” to publishers. The book will focus on the design element of the flowing line, how I use it in my own quilts, and the various techniques I employ to bring the flowing line to life. I’m excited about it . . . keep your fingers crossed for me!

Congratulations to Alice Brody whose work Spiral Worlds Variation 1 was accepted for the show From Fine Arts to Fiber: Reinterpreting the Masters at the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell MA. The show will be up
from August 4 through Sept 4.

Congratulations also goes to Vivien Zepf whose work has been published in the June/July 2010 Quilting Arts Magazine Inner Animal Challenge.

Susan Schrott's pieces Andantio and Adagio Triptych have been juried into the Pen and Brush first on -line exhbition Transtions.

This is a Quilt!: SAQA's 2011-2012 Traveling Trunk Show
Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) invites all SAQA members to submit work for its 2011- 2012 traveling trunk show. This trunk show is designed to showcase SAQA artists, to help educate the public at large about the art quilt, and to serve as a teaching tool for our members.*

Theme: This is a Quilt! How do we as SAQA members explain what we do - create quilts - without people immediately thinking of a nine-patch that goes on your bed? By example, of course! SAQA defines an art quilt as "a contemporary
artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, assemblage and sculpture, which retains, through materials or technique, a
clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends." This definition is purposely broad to accommodate the wondrous and exciting art quilts SAQA members are creating.

General: Create one piece that constitutes an art quilt as defined above. All work will be photographed, matted, and prepared for exhibition by SAQA. The SAQA exhibition committee hopes to publish some or all of the quilts in a book
exploring the diversity of art quilts. All quilts will be returned to the artist after the travel schedule has ended.

Size: Minimum 9" per side, maximum 11" per side. The pieces will be matted behind a 12" white or off-white mat with an 8" square opening in the center. Only 8" sq. of your quilt will be visible. Because the artwork will be behind a mat, the edges
need not be finished. A very small number of three-dimensional pieces may be included. Please contact the curators for
details.

Statement: Write a statement to the curators explaining why, in your mind, this quilt fits the definition. Why did you choose to create this piece as an art quilt and not in a different medium? (200 words maximum). The statement will be attached to the
back of the mat

Materials: Write a separate statement listing the materials and techniques used in the piece.
Submission: Send the piece to curators. Email the statement and materials list in .doc, .rtf, or .odt format to the curators. In your email, please include: your name, address including country, email address, and the name of your SAQA Region (ex.
“Europe/Israel” or “NJ/DE”).

Brenda Schlechter has been offered an artist in residence for the next 6 months in Far Rockaway, at JASA Brookdale Village Senior Center. She will be working in their art studio and teaching a class in making a Heritage Quilt, something that should appeal to the seniors.

Interactive Fiber Art Installation to be Featured at the Drisha Institute on Sunday May 16. SAQA member Heather G. Stoltz will show her work at A Letter Unread: Drisha Arts Fellows Present a Year of Learning 2:00pm on Sunday, May 16. Twelve artists who were this year’s recipients of the prestigious Drisha Arts Fellowship will present the visual art, musical theater, poetry and other art inspired by their studies.

Heather’s piece Flinging Prayer will take shape over the course of the program as attendees add their own prayers with the use of a small catapult.
